Bone Marrow Aspirate Test

The Bone Marrow Aspirate Test is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure that involves taking a sample of the liquid portion of the soft tissue inside your bones. This tissue contains a mixture of white blood cells (including progenitor cells, lymphocytes, and granulocytes), platelets, growth factors, and proteins.

Bone Marrow Aspirate Test procedures may include bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) treatment, which uses a patient’s own bone marrow aspirate for its potential to reduce inflammation and help restore normal function in joints and tendons in some patients.

Physicians may recommend this Test with BMAC treatment for patients who have not responded to conservative therapies such as physical therapy, medications, rest, or other injections. It may also benefit patients who are not surgical candidates or prefer to avoid elective surgery.

During this procedure, the physician carefully collects bone marrow using a specialized needle under sterile conditions. The procedure typically takes a short amount of time and is performed in a controlled clinical setting. After collection, the sample may be processed to concentrate the cellular components before treatment.

Because the material comes from the patient’s own body, BMAC treatment is considered an autologous procedure. Physicians evaluate each patient individually to determine whether a Bone Marrow Aspirate Test is appropriate based on medical history, symptoms, and treatment goals.

Conditions Treated with this procedure include:

Osteoarthritis of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle and foot, rotator cuff tears, ligament tears including tears of the UCL in the elbow of throwing athletes, hip labral tears, articular Cartilage injuries, advanced tendon injuries and high-grade tendon injuries of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle and foot and muscle strains or tears.
